On Encoding the π-calculus in Higher-Order Calculi

چکیده
The connection between first-order calculi and higher-order calculi have been examined in many setting within the area of process calculi. In this paper we examine two existing encodings of the π-calculus in higherorder calculi: the encoding in HOπ-calculus by Sangiorgi and Walker and the encoding in Plain CHOCS by Thomsen. We propose a new encoding of the synchronous π-calculus in the calculus of Higher-Order Mobile Embedded Resources (Homer) inspired by the aforementioned encodings. Homer is a pure higher-order calculus with mobile processes in nested locations, defined as a simple, conservative extension of the core process-passing subset of Thomsen’s Plain CHOCS. Our encoding demonstrates that non-linear higher-order process-passing together with mobile resources in, possibly local, named locations are sufficient to express πcalculus name-passing.

Expressing First-order Pi-calculus in Higher-order CCS
In the research field of process calculi, encoding between different calculi is an effective way to compare the expressive power of them and can shed light on the essence of where the difference lies. Thomsen and Sangiorgi have worked on the higher-order calculi (higher-order CCS and higherorder pi-calculus, respectively) and the encoding to and from first-order pi-calculus. But the work is not...
متن کاملOn the Expressiveness of Polyadicity in Higher-Order Process Calculi (Extended Abstract)
In higher-order process calculi the values exchanged in communications may contain processes. We describe a study of the expressive power of strictly higher-order process calculi, i.e. calculi in which only process passing is allowed and no name-passing is present. In this setting, the polyadicity (i.e. the number of parameters) allowed in communications is shown to induce a hierarchy of calcul...
متن کاملOn Bisimulation Theory in Linear Higher-Order π-Calculus
Higher-order process calculi have been receiving much attention in recent years for its significance in both theorey and practice. Work on bisimulations has never ceased evolving, typically represented by Thomsen and Sangiorgi for their work on bisimulation theory and encoding to and from first-order process calculi. Fu puts forth linear higher-order π-calculus, and makes improvement to previou...

متن کاملMove vs Copy: Towards a Formal Comparison of Ambients and Higher-Order Process Calculi
We describe ongoing work on a formal comparison between Ambient-like and higher-order process calculi. Both formalisms are similar in that they communicate complex objects. Also, in both cases the associated behavioral theory can be hard to define, and employs similar techniques. However, some other characteristics suggest deep differences. Communication in Ambients resembles a “move” operation...
